For the past 33 years Doug Branscombe has been employed in the field of Recreation with the Halifax Regional Municipality. He is a strong advocate of active living and recreation for all. Doug chairs the Recreation Nova Scotia Recreation Matters provincial committee. For over 25 years he has coached basketball, soccer and softball and introduced basketball to Halifax Special Olympics in the Fall of 2006 with over 35 athletes now involved.
His hero and real inspiration is his daughter Natalie who was born in 1989 with an intellectual disability. Natalie has won Provincial awards in both Basketball and Bowling and has shown that even with a disability you can still compete at the highest level. She is a true leader and advocate within her community.
Doug believes each day provides us another great opportunity to learn, grow and advocate for ourselves and others in the area of active living. He truly believes that all abilities should be welcomed when it comes to being active and that everyone has something positive to contribute if you just give them the opportunity!
